What causes tooth decay?
Tooth decay is caused by having too much sugar in the diet. This feeds the sugar bugs that naturally occur in your mouth, they then produce an acid that causes the holes in your teeth.
How can I help prevent tooth decay?
Reducing your daily intake of sugar will help prevent tooth decay, combined with good oral hygiene. Sugar is found in a lot of foods and drinks both artificially and naturally, so it’s important to check labels. Interestingly it does not matter how many sugars you have in your tea/coffee the effect on your teeth is still the same, whether you have one or four. This shows the frequency you have sugar throughout the day is more important that the amount.
What can the dentist and hygienist do to help with preventative care?
Both the dentist and the hygienist can educate you with methods of how to prevent poor oral health. This involves diet advice, fluoride application, oral hygiene instruction and regular recalls to monitor any changes.
How often should I visit the dentist and the hygienist?
Normally you will visit the dentist and the hygienist every 6 months. However, this is dependent on a low caries risk and good gum health. Some people will be seen every 3 months and occasionally on a yearly basis.
